Apple’s future identity in Crisis: How the Car Industry will Force Apple to Change

April 18, 2017

Apple is known for its secretive company culture and providing the public with little information about their current projects and products. Over the past couple of years, there have been many rumors about Apple’s plans to become involved in the automotive industry. Initially, it had been rumored that Apple was developing its own electric car through a project called Project Titan. Now, it is believed that the project has shifted focus to developing self-driving car software.

Carplay

Project Titan is not Apple’s first involvement in the industry. In 2014, Apple released CarPlay, an app that integrates iOS with over 200 car models. The app allows you to use your iPhone through the car’s infotainment system. This was the start of iOS integration with cars. In 2016, Apple received a patent for a portable device, like an iPhone, that can control different functions of a car, such as unlocking the doors, starting the engine, and turning on lights. What will be next? Will we be able to drive a car using an iPhone?

Whatever the functionality of the new self-driving software, it is safe to assume it will be highly integrated with iOS devices and will strive to maintain the closed system practices that Steve Jobs instilled in the company mission. This leads to the debate about whether Apple will develop their own car or partner with an already existing car company.

Catch up or time to change

Apple has opened discussions with several different automotive companies, but it seems as though no partnerships have been established. This could be the result of the company’s strong desire for control and deep integration and leaves just one option. To build their own car. Is Apple too far behind? Will they be forced to open their closed system? Only time will tell.
